Enjoy
orchestra balance, balcony, or family circle seats to Saturday
matinee performances of the internationally-acclaimed Metropolitan
Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City.
All opera
trips feature faculty leadership, advance studynotes, round
trip transportation and bus driver gratuity. Operas are sung
in Italian, German or French. Each seat has individual screens
with English subtitles for simultaneous translation of the
words sung on stage.
The motorcoach
departs from Clayton Hall at 7:00 a.m., and from the Wilmington
Campus, 2800 Pennsylvania Avenue (first parking lot on right)
at 7:30 a.m. The coach departs NYC at approximately 4:30 p.m.
to return to Delaware. Independent time for dining, visiting
museums, or shopping is provided prior to the performance.

Nathan Gunn as the bird-catcher Papageno. This mystical fairy

Damnation de Faust

When
it premiered last season Robert Lepage’s production
amazed audiences through its use of virtual scenery, interactive
video, and aerial acrobatics. Ramón Vargas, Olga Borodina,
and Ildar Abdrazakov will bring Berlioz’s stunning score
to life, with James Conlon conducting. This production was
reconceived for the Metropolitan Opera and is based on a co-production
of the Saito Kinen Festival and the Opéra National
de Paris.

A powerhouse
team joins forces for Offenbach’s psychological fantasy.
James Levine conducts, and Tony Award® winner Bart Sher
(South Pacific) returns after the triumph of his Met Barber
of Seville to direct. Inspired by Kafka, Sher describes his
production as “a magical journey in which the character
works out different manifestations of his psyche.” Rolando
Villazón plays Hoffmann, a tour de force role for the
tenor. Also starring soprano Anna Netrebko as the tragic Antonia,
Elina Garanca as the ambiguous Nicklausse, and René
Pape as the demonic four villains.

Keenlyside and Natalie Dessay bring their extraordinary acting
and singing skills to two of Shakespeare’s unforgettable
characters. When this production, directed by Patrice Caurier
and Moshe Leiser, opened in London at Covent Garden, The Independent
called Keenlyside’s Hamlet, "a revelation - thrilling
throughout.” Dessay plays the volatile Ophelia, whose
extended mad scene is among the greatest in opera. Louis Langrée
conducts.

than six tenors. Mary Zimmerman returns to direct, bringing
her fine-tuned theatricality to a work she describes as “a
buried treasure, a box of jewels.” The fanciful story
of the sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison of
sensual delights, Zimmerman says, “has an epic, enchanted
quality and a tremendous visual element.”
