The legal
nurse consultant (LNC) serves as a liaison between the legal
and the health-care communities. Legal nurse consultants combine
their clinical experience with knowledge of legal theory and
the litigation process to provide valuable expertise in legal
cases involving medical issues. Collaborating with attorneys,
insurance companies, and other professionals involved in the
litigation process, the legal nurse consultant provides expertise
in the medical and health-care field.
LNCs may
work in independent practice, or may be employed by law firms,
insurance companies, government offices, and risk management
departments. Law firms hiring LNCs may be large practices
with multiple specialties, including medical issues, or small
firms whose primary focus is medical-related litigation, such
as medical malpractice, personal injury, or insurance litigation.
About joining the field
"The
Legal Nurse Consultant profession provides experienced registered
nurses practically infinite opportunities in the medical and
legal fields. The University of Delaware’s Legal Nurse
Consultant Certificate broadens the RN’s knowledge through
classroom and practicum and also assists the RN in developing
and enhancing his or her presentation, writing, and computer
skills. Nurses in this program learn to review, analyze, and
evaluate medical records and offer opinions regarding the
merits of a case. Increasing awareness in issues of liability
and understanding the impact of legal theory on the medical
and judicial systems provides RNs with an outstanding blending
of two professions while making them a credible member of
both fields."

Meet a graduate of the program
"The
Legal Nurse Consultant certificate, with its focus on the
technology of today’s legal field, as well as its experienced
and dedicated instructors, gave me the education and hands-on
experience that I needed to become a successful Legal Nurse.
I would recommend this program to nurses who are looking not
only to boost their current career, but also to become the
greatest advocate to their clients that they can be. It’s
the best decision that I’ve ever made."
