Phil
Vavala teaches AP Biology at Salesianum School; he has led
the University’s AP Biology Institute since 1992. Selected
to participate in programs sponsored by the Biotechnology
Institute, Genentech’s Access Excellence, and Tandy Scholars,
he was designated the Outstanding Biology Teacher for Delaware
in 1988. Phil received College Board’s Commitment to Education
Awards in 1992 and 2005. He and his staff were highly involved
in the design of Salesianum’s Abessinio Science Center where
this institute is held.
Course
description
Conducted
in a fully equipped high school biology lab, this course exposes
teachers to ideas and techniques related to curriculum design,
sample syllabi, reading lists, course mechanics, and the grading
of the AP exam. Course content and methodology are addressed
through lecture, discussion, computer work, and in execution
of laboratory work. Participants will work in the laboratory-classroom
used by Mr. Vavala’s AP students. Particular emphasis
will be placed on the use of electronic probes and computers
to perform labs in parallel with AP recommended biology labs.
