Curriculum
The Certificate
in Business Communications is comprised of the following four
modules. All modules must be successfully completed in order
to earn the certificate. Effective
Business Writing
The introductory
module begins with a discussion of communication styles as
a tool for developing more effective communications within
your organization. Learn to identify your own personal style
and gain an appreciation of the styles of others. We then
focus on business writing in today’s hectic, fast-paced world.
This module has a real-world focus that stresses creating
effective e-mails and other current forms of written communication.
It starts with a basic review of grammar and punctuation,
and proceeds to the fundamental steps in the writing process—planning,
organizing, writing, and editing. You will have opportunities
to edit your own work and use realistic examples to improve
your writing style.
Presentation
and Oral Communication Skills
Focus
on building your oral communication skills, whether you use
them one-on-one or making a presentation in front of a group.
You will learn about critical conversations, active listening,
presenting your ideas, use of audiovisual aids, and facilitating
a discussion or meeting. You will have opportunities to enhance
your presentation skills in a supportive environment. Portions
of this module may be videotaped as a tool for personal growth.
Assertive
Communication and Supervision
Designed
for supervisors, managers, and team leaders, this highly interactive
two-day workshop provides you with training and practice to
enhance your interpersonal communication and supervisory skills.
It focuses on introducing techniques and building skills to
improve your ability to lead and motivate others in the workplace.
The workshop addresses common supervisory issues such as confronting
performance problems, dealing with difficult people, and motivating
behavioral change. Through its interactive format, you will
have an opportunity to practice new skills and learn to apply
them in real world situations. Topics include
- Identifying
your communication style
- Building
rapport and trust in the workplace
- Effectively
confronting interpersonal problems and performance issues
- Motivating
behavior changes
- Dealing
with difficult people and situations
- Maintaining
objectivity to constructively address problems
Project
Presentations
At the
conclusion of the program, you will demonstrate your skills
by presenting a project of your choosing that incorporates
both written and oral components.
