Public
and community leadership
Faith-Based Community Development Certificate
The
next offering of this program is planned for Spring 2009
Capacity-building
of community development and social service nonprofit organizations
has become a critical element in today’s society, both nationally
and locally. There is increasing reliance by both federal
and state governments on faith and secular communitybased
organizations to provide child care, affordable housing, health
care, and human capital development to low-to-moderate income
groups. Effectively producing the services needed, fostering
community building, and sustaining their organizations are
often very challenging, or even elusive, endeavors for religious
organizations.
The Faith-based
Community Development Certificate is designed for religious
and lay leaders from churches, mosques, parishes, and synagogues
interested in developing skill sets to plan and implement
commercial real estate development, employment training, housing
development, child care programs, work force training, or
business enterprises. The focus of the program is on how to
develop effective community-building activities and how to
build sustainable community development organizations.
Nationally-recognized
faith and community development professionals serve as the
instructors for the course. They represent the breadth of
the field in religious and faith affliliations, areas of expertise,
age, gender, and cultural identity. The learning modules of
the seven-week course emphasize building the management, governance,
and planning capacities of religious institutions, separatelyincorporated
nonprofit organizations, and community development corporations
established by faith-based organizations.
Class
size is limited to 15 and is determined on a first-come, first-served
basis. A limited number of scholarships are available. For
more information on course expectations, scholarships, or
accommodations, contact Raheemah Jabbar-Bey, director of the
Community-Based Development Training Program, at 302/831-6780.
This
program takes place in Wilmington. |
