SOCIOLOGY
Bachelor of Arts
The sociology
major at the University of Delaware combines a liberal arts
foundation with extensive interdisciplinary learning. Sociology
studies the lives and interactions of groups and individuals.
It examines the processes of socialization, as well as social
trends and their impact on past and present group behavior.
Sociology also deals with variations and similarities among
peoples of differing cultures and times, the roles groups
play in society, and the impact of class structure on individual
lives as well as on a culture's political climate and traditions.
Students studying sociology have an increased awareness of
the social forces that shape our lives and are, therefore,
better able to explain behaviors and contribute to public
policy debate. Sociologists often find employment as researchers
with foundations, universities, and government agencies. Their
analytical skills are valued by employers in business and
industry. Additional job opportunities exist in health services,
program management and administration, and urban planning.
