About the field

Twenty years ago, no one ever said, ‘I want to be a financial advisor when I grow up.’

"Now there are nearly 300 college programs for financial planning, and MBAs, lawyers, and accountants are jumping to this lucrative, but more people-friendly, profession. As company pensions die out and Americans increasingly have to manage their own retirement savings, financial planning is not just for the rich. And with Gen X-ers entering their peak earning years and boomers nearing retirement, business will get better still.” ("50 Best Jobs in America” April 25, 2006, Money Magazine)

Financial planners use their knowledge of investments, tax laws, and insurance to help individuals solve financial problems and achieve life goals. They may assist their clients with retirement and estate planning, funding for college, and general investment options, or they may specialize in specific topics such as tax law or risk management. Financial planners may work as independent consultants or are employed by banks and other large firms.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment opportunities in this field will continue to expand at faster than the average job growth rate. Demand for financial planners will grow as baby boomers plan for retirement and as an increasing number of ordinary individuals seek the advice of financial planning professionals to help them make informed financial decisions.

Meet the director

"With over 22 years in the financial services industry, it has become quite evident to me that financial planners must meet the gold standard to attract, retain, and benefit a growing clientele. Today, that standard is Certified Financial Planner™ certification, the most recognizable accreditation in a well-informed market place. As the boundary lines which used to dictate the roles of the various disciplines in the financial arena (financial planners, bankers, accountants, insurance agents, and attorneys) continue to overlap and blur, only the well educated will be able to thrive in this expanding but competitive, sophisticated marketplace."

Meet a graduate

"For me, the positives about the University of Delaware program were the one-year time period and the classroom setting. The program's instructors were all working professionals in their fields who did a great job of bringing their experiences into the classroom." [Click here to read more...]
