Math Placement Exam
Continuing
Education students who want to enroll in a math course at
the University of Delaware are expected to take the Math Placement
Exam. The exam is not one that a student will 'pass' or 'fail,'
but rather is used to assist advisors in determining which
level of math coursework is appropriate based upon the student’s
mathematical skills and the major selected. The exam consists
of 36 questions divided into topics of algebra, precalculus
and trigonometry.
Once the
exam is complete, a counselor in the ACCESS Center will score
the results and review them with the student. The student
will be advised as to which level of math is appropriate.
It is important to keep in mind that generally students who
enroll in math courses beyond their abilities either withdraw
from the course, or earn an unsatisfactory grade.
Exceptions
- If
a student has scored 3 or better in an AP Calculus course
prior to taking the math course, the Math Placement Exam
is waived.
- Transfer
students whose math course has been successfully transferred
as MATH 221 or higher also do not have to take the exam,
with the exception of MATH 266.
Please
keep in mind that even if you are technically exempt from
taking the exam, if there is any question about your level
of mathematical ability, it is strongly encouraged that you
take the exam.
