Essentials of Management Certificate
Curriculum
Understanding
People and Organizations
Explore
how people behave in organizations
and how you as a manager or team leader
can work with them to accomplish the
organization’s goals. This module begins
with an overview of what management is
and what it’s not. You will investigate human
motivation; the behavior of organizations;
organizational culture and how you can use
it; team dynamics and how to accomplish
work through teams; and techniques for
leading people from your position in the
organization.
Assertive
Communication and Supervision
Solid
interpersonal communications skills are
essential in order to be effective in working
with other people. In this two-day workshop
you explore how to use language (verbal
and non-verbal) to enhance your communications
with others. Through a variety of
interactive exercises, you will gain practical
experience in guiding and coaching others,
confronting performance problems, working
with difficult people, and directing behavioral
change. In addition, you will learn
about different communication styles, how
to build rapport and trust, and how to
maintain objectivity as you are working
constructively to resolve problems.
Understanding
How a Business Works
Managers
and supervisors provide a channel
through which information flows about how
well an organization is working. To be more
effective in providing these crucial linkages
between those who do the day-to-day work
and the organization’s leadership, you need
to understand the language of business. This
module focuses on three key business functions:
marketing, operations, and financial
management. The marketing section is
customer-focused and provides guidance in
how to develop a marketing perspective for
information gathering and customer contact
including selling. The operations section
explores how organizations develop work
processes and continuously improve them to
attain higher levels of quality. The finance
section examines how and why organizations
measure financial results, and helps you to
become familiar with typical reports used to
understand the financial health of a business
or organization.
Manager’s
Toolkit
From
simple daily time management to long-term strategic planning
techniques, all managers rely on a toolkit of skills to help
them work with and through others. This module provides you
with an array of practical tools and skills that can be applied
to any work environment. It is designed to help you understand
what management tools are available, how to implement them,
and when to use them. Among the “hands-on” skills
covered are: goal setting, delegating, negotiating, brainstorming,
effective meeting planning, and problem-solving techniques.
