Program combines classroom instruction with hands-on practice
The Personal Fitness Trainer Course is a 15-week entry-level program comprised of 120 hours of instruction, including classroom instruction, hands-on practice and online activities. Class meets two days per week at Leisure Fitness in Newark, Delaware.

Jim Menz, MS, CSCS
Jim Menz began his health & wellness career as a Certified Personal Trainer in 1992 and was certified in massage therapy the following year. In his career he has worked with a spectrum of clients in community, athletic and rehabilitative settings. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Corrective Exercise Specialist, holds a master’s degree in exercise science and a postgraduate certificate in rehabilitative science. Early in his education career, Jim created the curriculum used by the largest personal training school in the country. Jim has been a college instructor for eight years and has constructed programs in exercise science and massage therapy for Salem and Cumberland County Colleges. He is an adjunct faculty member of health and exercise science at Rowan University and recently completed a series of lectures for health professionals near New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas and throughout Florida. An engaging and energetic instructor, Jim has presented at numerous continuing education events for trainers, therapists, coaches and nurses since 2004.
The Personal Fitness Trainer Course is a unique 15-week, live program designed specifically to prepare participants to work as personal fitness trainers to clients of all ages. This course establishes strong foundations in the functions of the human body as well as the science of exercise, as well as health, medical and exercise considerations. Every class session includes essential theory (lecture) information and a practical application segment. The active learning presented by hands-on participation reinforces concepts learned in class.
The content is carefully constructed so that it requires no prior experience or training, and consists of relevant, high quality material that offers continuing education for current trainers, coaches, nurses and therapists. The course features a highly qualified, energetic faculty and is held at Leisure Fitness in Newark, Delaware to maximize learning opportunities.
Module I: Scientific Foundations—Building Blocks
This opening module will equip the student with a strong set of language, science and practical skills which will enable him/her to excel in the understanding of the human body and the role of exercise in optimizing health, function and longevity, and prepare the student to master the upcoming course topics.
Module II: Neuromuscular Function—Principles & Applications
This second module examines the crucial systems involved in human movement. The student will earn an appreciation for the skeletal, nervous, and muscular systems and the interacting roles these systems play in creating our exercise movements and everyday activities. Concepts introduced in the class room will be reinforced through observation, performance and instruction of fundamental exercises.
Module III: Metabolic Processes—The Living Body
In module three, students explore the life-sustaining processes of respiration, circulation, digestion and hormonal regulation. The vital organs are examined by structure and function, as well an introduction of the most common issues and pathologies which affect these critical systems.
Module IV: Special Considerations—Exercise & Nutrition for Everybody
The course concludes with a survey of the most common health challenges individuals face and how these issues relate to exercise application. Along with a concise tour of nutrition, this module empowers the student to bring the benefits of exercise to clients of any age.
