“It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.” W. Edwards Deming

To survive in a fast-paced global economy, businesses and organizations need to be customer-focused, fast, and flexible, as do the people who work for them. High performance management systems are designed to create an environment of continuous process improvement—with the aim of taking organizations from “good” to “great” performance levels. Six Sigma, the Baldrige Criteria, Lean Enterprise, Process Mapping, and Balanced Scorecard are among the management tools available to help companies go to the next level. Finding the combination of these practices and tools that best fits your organization is the key to success.

“Anything we do, we can get better at. The tools of performance management help us analyze how good we are at what we’re doing, and how to put a plan in place for true improvement.” Linda Bankoski, Quality Leadership Associate

“Over twenty Delaware library staff participated in the Performance Management Certificate, which is key to our quality initiatives. We were able to apply what we had learned to real world situations in our organization, and due in part to the training in this program, the Delaware Division of Libraries received the Delaware Quality Commitment Award in 2004 and the Delaware Quality Award of Merit for 2005. When we are managing our resources and services effectively, we are increasing the value of libraries to the public.” Annie Norman, State Librarian and Director, Delaware Division of Libraries

The Performance Management Certificate is currently being restructured and updated. The next offering of this program is planned for Fall 2009. For more information, call 302/571-5239 or write to business-mgmt@udel.edu.
