Please read the information below which contains:

PRECEPTOR FAQ

When may the RN begin the clinical experience?

No one should be permitted in the clinical setting until an e-mail approval has been received by your institutional representative.  The UD Division of Professional and Continuing Studies must have copies of all required documentation (immunization and CPR data, background/drug testing if required by your institution, etc.) from the student which must include the name and credentials of the institutional proctor.

Can AD nurses serve as preceptors?

All preceptors must be BSN nurses.  This is the UD policy for all nurse preceptors including the RN Refresher Course.

Do the RNs have to complete all of the procedures listed on the Procedures to be Performed or Observed by the Student During Clinical Cycle of the Course form?

No, but we expect that the majority (75% or more) will be completed.  Exceptions should be noted by the preceptor on the form itself.  For example, perhaps peritoneal dialysis is not available at your site.  A short notation on the sheet would indicate this.

Can RNs be assigned to specialty units?

In order to meet the clinical requirements, most of their time should be spent on general medical/surgical units.

Are preceptors compensated financially for their services?

No, but we hope that the reward of mentoring a colleague who will return to active practice is a reward in itself. We appreciate your commitment and participation in this endeavor. You’ll receive a certificate and small token of appreciation at the conclusion of the experience.
